Animate the iOS Keyboard in After Effects

The iOS Keyboard template is an After Effects template that lets you automatically animate the iOS Keyboard inside After Effects. Just add your text and the template will do the rest.

How it works

Step 1 - Open preferred comp

The template includes 2 different comps:

  1. iOS Keyboard - Messages
  2. iOS Keyboard - Plain

Use iOS Keyboard - Messages to recreate the keyboard + output used in the Messages iOS app.

Use iOS Keyboard - Plain to recreate the keyboard for any iOS app. Please note this template is designed to animate the keyboard typing effect only – not the output from the keyboard itself.

Step 2 - Add text

With one of the comps open, type or paste your text in TYPE layer.

If your type does not show up, drag the current time indicator past the second keyframe on TYPE layer.

Step 3 - Set type keyframes

On the TYPE layer there are 2 keyframes indicating the start and end of the typing animation. You can reposition these keyframes, add additional keyframes, or add easing to the keyframe to get the timing to your liking.

Step 4 - Edit appearance

On the TYPE layer, under the Keyboard Appearance effect, you can make several adjustments to the appearance.

Dark Mode

Makes the background a dark color, and makes the text light.

Default Keyboard

Sets the keyboard to either uppercase, lowercase, numbers, or symbols, before and after the typewriting animation happens.

Colors

Sets the colors used throughout the composition

In the iOS Keyboard - Plain comp there is an additional effect called Hide Help Bar. Check this box to hide the help bar (normally where predictive text or message apps show up).

Step 5 - Render or use in separate comp

The keyboard is now ready to render. It will automatically highlight the last character “pressed” based on the TEXT animation.

You can render the comp as is or use it inside a different comp to perfectly recreate an iOS keyboard animation.

In iOS Keyboard - Plain, the TYPE layer itself will not render. If you’d like to render it, right click on the TYPE layer and unselect the Guide Layer option.
